Miracles and Clean Underwear

We had a lovely awards ceremony here at the end of the year, and a good time was had by all.

At that time, I skipped answering the questions for the awards and threatened promised to answer them in a later post. That later post is today.

I’ll start with the standard “seven things” about me, but I’ll share seven things I’ve never done before:
1. I’ve never broken a bone.
2. I’ve never snow skied.Image
3. I’ve never traveled overseas.
4. I’ve never bungee jumped.
5. I’ve never acted in a play.
6. I’ve never eaten sushi.
7. I’ve never used power tools.

~~~~~
Here are seven more to go with the other awards. There are life lessons included:
1) I met my husband on a blind date. At the end of the evening, I told him I didn’t want to see him again. The next day, he told his friends at work that he had met his future wife the night before. Don’t automatically count out the blinding white, cute, blonde guy because he wore white shoes and a white tie.
2) With influentially bad friends, I sneaked into Everglades National Park at midnight, walked out onto a boardwalk, and threw pennies at the alligators.  I found out later we were lucky we weren’t eaten by them. Don’t let your friends try to lead you to your death.
3) I lost control of a car on an icy bridge once. Thankfully, I was in the third lane and the car went left onto the berm instead of right and under the semi next to me. Don’t brake on an icy bridge – even if you don’t know it’s icy.
4) I currently drive a navy blue Ford F150 truck. I never thought I would enjoy driving a truck so much.  Don’t tell your husband “no” when he wants you to drive a truck.
5) I locked myself out of my truck once with only a t-shirt and thin jacket on (and pants for all you wisenheimers). It was during a brutal winter storm, and I had to wait an hour for the tow truck. Don’t wear lightweight clothing in winter, even if you think you are going to be warm in your vehicle.
6) I once lost control of my car (yes, I know!) and ended up in a Imagesnow bank very late at night. I walked two miles home in the snow. My neighbor was a State Highway Patrolman, and I knocked at his door for help. He had the car towed home for me. My brothers saw my tracks in the snow the next day and laughed their butts off. They refused to believe it was me and not some drunk. Don’t drive in bad snow conditions late at night when you’re tired.
7) I once made a grand entrance into a company Christmas party. I was the last person to arrive, and I had to walk down a long staircase into the room. I used my best staircase walk to try to be elegant as I made my way down. My heel caught in the back of my dress and I pitched down several steps on my knees before I could catch myself. When you fall down in front of 300 people, just remember, they can’t help it that they laugh; it’s instinctive.
Moving on to the Super Sweet Blog Award, here are my answers. (I was awarded this again last week by Card Castles in the Sky; thank you so much!)
Cookies or Cake?  Cake
Chocolate or Vanilla?  What is this thing you call vanilla?
What is your favorite sweet treat? Chocolate brownies – hold the nuts.
When do you crave sweet things the most?  Evenings
If you had a sweet nickname what would it be? Sweetie Pie
~~~~~

The Liebster Award was recently awarded to me by Card Castles in the Sky; thank you again! I have questions to answer from Malinka of Malinka’s Studio, and also from Jackie at Change Is Good…..Right???  This would be a lot of questions, so I’ve narrowed it down to several from each list:

What is the exact time and date that you were born?  I was born at 8:00 p.m. on April 20.

What do you believe in?  I believe in miracles and clean underwear.

If someone would write a book upon your life, it would be named?  Sunshine Hunter

Tell us a dear childhood memory that you still cherish.  Playing kick-the-can late at night with siblings, neighbors, and my aunt. Image

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?  Starbuck’s Java Chip

If you could meet anyone in the whole of time and space, who would it be?  I know most people would be philosophical here, but I want to meet Frank Sinatra. I’d tell Frank that I think we would have had a good time cruising around Las Vegas together, and please sing “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” to me.

Why did chicken cross the street? Because Susan Hunter was over there with chicken feed. 🙂

What got you into blogging? I wanted to chronicle the writing of my books.

When you aren’t blogging what do you do? I don’t remember what I used to do in my spare time. Image

What’s your greatest vice? Playing the lottery.

What was your favorite moment of 2012?  Seeing my first book published on Amazon.

Your next dream travel destination?  The grocery store. Our refrigerator is empty.

A few simple things you love in life?  Listening to sappy, romantic music. Standing outside late at night and listening to the quiet.

What musical instrument have you tried to learn to play? I tried to teach myself to play piano. My left hand refused to cooperate.

Do you like shopping? I like grocery shopping. I hate shopping for clothes. I really, really, hate having to slog through a Gander Mountain or some other manly store.

A wish for this year? To win the blasted lottery! (and world peace)

Phew! But you probably already knew all of these things.

ImageTo tie up some loose ends, I want to thank Pam Tanzey for giving me my sixth Blog of the Year 2012 star to fill my card. Thank you, Pam! I also received a bonus star this week from Jae at Scatterbrain. Thank you, Jae!

  1. Whether in a vehicle or on foot, it seems you don’t have too much luck. (It’s okay, though. I know many like that. I have a friend who is convinced toddlers in her neighborhood are trying to assassinate her.)

    Good post. 😀

  2. This is the best awards thing post i have read. So interesting! You inspire me to talk more about myself. But i won’t.
    Also, i am dying for someoene to tell me how kick the can works.
    Also, no sushi? I guess you’ve never had sushi pizza then 😦

    • You should talk more about yourself. Do a list of 50 things about yourself. 😉

      Kick the can is best played at night. Set a large empty can (not a weenie vegetable one, but a bigger one) upside down in the center of the yard. All players gather round and do one potato, two potato to see who has to stay at the can. Now the can person closes their eyes and counts to at least 20 (not too fast), while the other players run and hide. Players must stay hidden until one of them is found. Once found, both the can guy and the hider guy run for the can, and whoever gets there first kicks the can. If the hider kicks the can, he is safe, and can sit down and relax with the can/finder guy looks for the next hider. If the can guy manages to kick the can, the round is over, and the hider who did not kick the can is the can can/finder guy for the next round. They then yell, “olly olly oxen free” and everyone comes in from their hiding places to do it all over again. There are a lot of variations on the game, but this is how we played.

      And sushi pizza sounds disgusting. Order one and take a picture so I can see – because I don’t believe you. 😉

  3. I was just thinking how very clever you are to fit all those awards into the one post and I saw my name on the Super Sweet Award Nom List….
    Congratulations…. I have to take a leaf from your book and get up to date…! (Sigh)
    Thank You for the Super Sweet Award; I’m delighted…. 🙂
    I couldn’t help but laugh with the 300 guests watching you trip the last few steps… I’m such a meany…!!! 😉 xoxoxo

    • I know it made for a long post, but I really wanted to catch up as much as I could. You are welcome for the award. I always try to match people to the award, and you are always so sweet and kind. … Yes, the fall down the stairs was classic; you can’t help but laugh. I could only laugh, too, at the time. I certainly didn’t want to cry in front of that many people 🙂

  4. Thank you so much for the award Maddie! I am truly honored! Also, your #7 on your life lessons list is horribly amazing. It’s the kind of thing you see in the movies, but don’t think would actually ever happen to you. I hope you have recovered.

    • You’re welcome! You have so much going on in your life, I hope some of my followers will click your link to come visit you. I have unintentionally put myself in so many embarrassing situations, I’ve become pretty good at laughing at myself. I can still see that moment as clear as day. 🙂

  5. Thank you so much! I had such fun reading about your wacky adventures. It was such a nice surprise to see a nomination for me at the bottom of the post! You’re such a sweetie pie! 🙂

  6. I look at this post and think of how long it would have taken me to compose it! Great job! On your I never’s….I’ve only 5 & 7’d. Seems you may as well ski as you spend a lot of time in the cold! 🙂 Thanks for the nod and “One of these days” that lottery will happen….for both of us! (though it was not last nite! 🙂 ) ♥

    • I started writing this post shortly after I did the awards at the end of December. I finally took the time to do the linking and formatting this week. I’ve fallen down so much, Paula, I can’t even count how many times. I’ve even had a dog pull me over in front of the neighbors before. So embarrassing. Two nights ago, my $1 ticket was a $10 winner. We’ll get there! 🙂

    • Ok, Paula, I read your response wrong the first time (wrong list of 7). You *have* acted in a play and used power tools. I’m kind of afraid of power tools. What have you acted in? I’d love to know!

      • And that’s why YOU are the writer!!! I tangle my words and my tongue! 🙂 Am not good with power tools at all….but use them when necessary! I acted in some stuff in highschool. Great fun….years ago….I recall auditioning (and getting) the part in “Nine Girls” of the sorority sister who died fairly early in the play. (yes…I was poisoned!) This was so I could be in the play, but not have to memorize too many lines!!! lol! good times ♥

  7. Huh, did I send you an award?? Really? Haha! I loved this. It was funny yet touching. I would have fell all the way down the stairs not just the last few. Ouchie. Hope you didn’t hurt yourself too bad. I really liked this post Maddie. I found out so much more about the person I stalk. 😉

  8. I’ve always wondered why someone falling or tripping makes us laugh. I guess the important thing is that hopefully we learn to make sure the person is okay before we start laughing at their expense. 🙂 How embarrassing that fall must have been for you!

    • Thank you, Hook! You are very kind.

      You’re in the list above for The Liebster Award (which means “dear”). Click on the award, and you will find the questions to answer with the award. If you do awards. 😉

  9. You’ve never used power tools !!!! I would be lost without power tools. Great post Maddie, I’m getting ready to start your last book, love the Susan Hunter Mysteries!!

    • I know! I had three brothers, and Dad taught them everything, but not me. I can do anything with a claw hammer though. Just ask my husband. I almost single-handedly took apart our deck with a claw hammer when I wanted it removed.

      I know I keep saying it, but I am sooo tickled that you are reading my books one right after the other – and enjoying them! The dog, Joe, in Big Easy Hunter, is based on our beloved hound dog, Joe. His picture is on my home page. Thank you again, Rita Kay. I hope you like the last book, too! 🙂

  10. Congratulations, Maddie! Well deserved! I love reading people’s answers to awards questions. I cringed as I read about you falling down the stairs–eeeep. I met Mr. Weebles on a blind date too, except he wasn’t wearing white shoes. And I think you’re right that Sinatra would have been AWESOME to hang out with in Vegas!

  11. I could never bungee jump. Taking that leap is putting a lot of trust in a big rubber band. You’ve never used power tools??? Girl you haven’t lived yet. Tell Rich to bring out the power tools this weekend & go get that experience. You need to try them, even if only once. You will feel the addiction grab you by the throat & it’ll never let go Muwahahahaha!!!
    Sorry I got a bit carried away.
    Circular saws are my favourite. Now I need to go to my shed & cut or drill something

    • Tony! I would be a disaster with power tools! I’ve cut myself with kitchen knives more times than I care to admit. Put a circular saw in my hands, and I’d be without a limb faster than you could shake a stick – even though it has a guard. 😉

  12. Maddie,
    I had a smart ass comment forming in my head when you made reference to “snow skiing”, about you living in a warm climate. But then you made reference to snow-driving. In any case, thank you for differentiating it from water skiing for your readers.

    You’re missing out on sushi, by the way.

  13. Congratulations on all the awards, Maddie. Well done 😀

    I think we should never drive together because I’ve hit the brakes on an icy road as well (not pleasant!)

    Thank you so much for the nomination. I’ll be going through all those links of the other nominees now and stalking them ruthlessly! 😉

  14. You’re going to need a bigger mantle for all those awards!
    I’ve done all of the seven things you list as never done.

    And now off to check out the nominees I don’t know…

  15. When I was a kid we had a game that was a combination of sushi and kick the can. We called it kick the bait bucket. As far as falling down the stairs you have to be quick with a line like, “Sorry to drop in so unexpectedly.”
    Power tools are awesome. From chainsaws to dremmels they are great for creating stuff. Mostly sawdust in my case but it is fun sawdust.
    Oh, and as for that world peace stuff…it ain’t happenin’.
    Congratulations on all your awards. They are all well deserved.

  16. Maddie, congrats on all of your awards and thanks so much for passing one on to lil’ ol’ me! *blush* I loved reading all of these tidbits about you (especially your what not to do’s, hehe) =P

    Thank you again!!!!!!

  17. Hi Maddie =)
    It seems you have to change my blog in the nomination list ^^
    from graphicdiaries.wordpress.com, into itskennkierza.wordpress.com
    Thanks =)

  19. Maddie,I winced when you described your fall at the Christmas party. Reading your post this morning, I find myself stunned but glad that you have never broken a bone. It must be your guardian angel. 🙂

    • For all the trees I’ve climbed, all the ice I’ve fallen on, and even sports injuries, I am truly grateful for no broken bones. I hope that guardian angel sticks around to watch over my hips in the years to come. 😉

      • I’ve sent off a memo, your hips are safe. Keep on keeping on, Maddie. As I keep saying, your positive outlook will see you through. I’m adopting you as my role model.

  20. Maddie,
    Gotta agree with you that sometimes it’s best to laugh at self when embarrassed. At least you didn’t break a bone, so that streak remains intact. Thanks for sharing the tidbits … and I know i’m due for a post like this.

    • It’s true, laughter is always the best medicine.

      I enjoy reading awards post. I always like to find out a few more things about the bloggers I enjoy.

      I need to stop by your blog soon and catch up. I saw Olive Oyl was hanging out there. 🙂

  21. Congrats on all the awards, Maddie! Much deserved!
    With the exception of #3, we’re exactly the same when it comes to the standard seven things. Sushi makes me cringe. I can barely stand cooked fish let alone raw fish!
    And as for shopping, I love grocery shopping too! Clothes shopping is such a hassle. I always find dressing rooms so stifling. 😦

    • Thank you, Zen! Why am I not surprised that my first seven match up pretty well with you. 😉 Fish is a tough sell for me, too, but I do love shrimp and lobster.

      I”ll be reading Puppet Parade before too long. I noticed you have a lot of reviews for it at Goodreads. Did you by chance do a giveaway(s) there? I think I’m not eligible for giveaways with them because my books are eBooks.

      • Shrimp is incredible! Did you get to try the shrimp pizza yet? 😉

        Actually yes. =D I did… four giveaways there (one time giving away two books), and it really helps. Even if your books are sold as eBooks, you can produce one printed copy to send to the winner, no?
